Is Being A Superwoman Hurting Your Business?
As women, we have a lot of roles; we are business people, mothers, besties, leaders, mentors, teachers, and oftentimes much more. Because of all the roles, we take on, we often don’t take the time to do any of those roles 100% or even take care of ourselves. Sound familiar?
Have you ever heard of Superwoman Syndrome? I know, it’s really a thing! Superwoman Syndrome is when you feel the need to do it ALL and do it PERFECTLY. And it’s a very common ailment for entrepreneurial women.
I have definitely been so guilty of this. I think I can do it all. Except I realize very quickly that I can’t do all the work and nothing turns out the way I really want it to.
While drive and determination can get you very far in creating and succeeding in your business, they can’t keep it going indefinitely. The longevity and how smoothly your business runs, not to mention how happy you are while you are running it, depends on you accepting reality, and the time and limitations of life.
When you stop trying to prove that you can “do it all”, things will fall into place. I, personally, still play a lot of roles. I think as women, we always will. But there are key things you should look to incorporate into the management of your business and your life that can help you focus less on “doing it all” and more on living your best life.
Accept That You Can’t Do Everything
Think about all the tasks in your life that you pay someone else to do. Get a pedicure, wash your car, get a haircut. Why is it okay to delegate tasks in your personal life that are better done by others with expertise than struggling to do it yourself?
Make a list of the tasks in your business that you love doing and the ones that you don’t. Go through the ones that don’t “spark joy” and see what you can either do without or outsource and pay someone else to do.
Become Good At Saying No
It's okay to say a big fat “No!” Saying no is empowering! We tend to waste our time on a lot of things that won’t help get us to our goals.
A lot of us are natural people-pleasers, and often we say yes to something out of fear of not being liked or a desire to take care of others. We have to make sure we are saying yes to things that make us happy - yes to experiences and choices that align with our passions, goals, and overall well-being.
Identify What You Suck At
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Things we love to do and things we really don’t like doing. Things that we struggle with and therefore take us more time and things we sail through because they align well with our brain.
If you can simply accept what you aren’t good at, you take the pressure off. When we can accept this fact, we are less likely to create unrealistic expectations for ourselves. We can’t be good at everything. Let it go. Accept it.
Ask For Help
This can be the hardest thing for us as women, yet the most important thing we could utilize. Recognizing and asking for help from family and friends is important. And creating a structure for your business where you can delegate work to people you trust to get it done right can make all the difference.
Asking for help can create more space and energy to do more since your needs and the needs of your business are taken care of. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak or any less strong or independent. But it does make us human and helps us to be there fully, to be present.
