How To Unstuck Your Business & Get Your Mojo Back

Every entrepreneur gets stuck at one point or another - and usually not just once.  Maybe you’ve had a few setbacks that were out of your control.  Maybe you made a bad decision that led you down a dead-end path.  Or maybe you just slowly got burnt out and are in desperate need of some time off.

No matter how you got here, you’re here!  In Stuckville.  And it feels like you’ll never get out of here in one piece. And it’s a pretty shitty feeling.

I’ve been there, multiple times in the 9 years I’ve owned various businesses.  It’s inevitable when you are running your own business.  And it’s definitely not easy to get out of because you can’t just bust through this roadblock like you need to do in other areas of your business.

Getting stuck in your business is like your car being stuck in the mud.  The more your tires spin, the more stuck you get.  The more you try to just bust through the stuckness and charge forward in your business, the more your wheels will just spin and you won’t go anywhere.

Well, you don’t have to be stuck forever.  In fact, even though these feelings are anything but easy, there are four fairly easy steps you can follow to help move you past the stuckness and toward freedom.

Why Are You Stuck?

How can you really get unstuck if you have no idea what’s causing it in the first place?  Figuring out the reason why you are stuck is hugely important. Sit down with a pen and paper and start brainstorming.

Identify where you are stalling and try to list all the possible solutions that might help you move forward. Even if they seem crazy right now, list it all out. Once you are clear about how you got here, it will be easier to get yourself out.

Figure Out Your Priorities & Plan

There are a lot of moving parts when you own your own business, so it makes sense that sometimes, the most important things aren’t getting done.  You have a never-ending to-do list, but when things get messy, and you get stuck, it is more important than ever to be clear on your priorities.

So once you have sat down and identified why you are stuck, identify those tasks on your to-do list that will help address that issue directly.  Prioritize those things above all others and make a plan in order to get it all done.  That might be delegating tasks, carving out more time, or creating a better process

Break it down into parts and tackle one at a time.  Move slow if you need to but don’t take on the next task until you have finished the one before.  Before you know it, you will be speeding along the unstuck highway.

Make Time For Your Business

The next step is to make more time for those important things.  Once you have identified how you got stuck and have found the tasks that will get out back on track, you need to carve out time to make it happen.

This might mean putting new business on hold or prioritizing your business above working on client tasks. Maybe you need to hire new employees or create new systems for your business so that things can continue to run smoothly while you are focusing on these new priorities.

Keep Making Forward Progress

Once you get to this point, this is where you can use your typical ‘buckle down and get-er done’ mentality to bust through your newly prioritized tasks.  If you try to do it before this point, you will only stall more.

So, slow down, take your time, and do the work to pull yourself out of Stuckville once and for all.
